When it gets quiet

When the kids are playing together and all of a sudden it gets very quiet, you just know it is bound to be a bad sign - some of the things I have found when the sudden quiet has descended on our house are:

  • Two little boys sitting on top of the bookshelves in the playroom, throwing wipes over the ledge so they fall down on the stairs

  • Jake trying to teach Travis how to go potty by "pretending" to go potty in the bathroom

  • Tape, on everything because they got into the spare room, and stole the tape and decided to use it

  • Jake coloring himself, his shirt, his shorts, and the dog blue - with a sharpie

  • They have closed themselves in the dog crate and are eating snacks

  • They are in my room with the door closed, jumping on the bed

  • They are on top of the pile of moving boxes in the dining room

  • Jake is "washing things" in the bathroom sink

  • They are "painting" my countertops with yogurt, applesauce, milk, macaroni, or almost any other food-like substance that they have within their reach

But sometimes, and only very rarely, things are actually all going right, and the two little boys have cleaned their playroom, and are both quietly drawing on magnadoodles - but of course this is the exception to the rule.

(yeah, I know the picture is from a year ago, but they are playing with a magnadoodle)

The toothfairy

Well, fun in the Hagler house continues as always - tonight's fun - tooth fairy.  And, no, I don't mean that Jake has lost a tooth and we are having to introduce the tooth fairy, I mean that he freaked out for no reason about the tooth fairy, which he decided to bring up at bedtime.  Conversation went something like this.

Jake: "Mom, my mouth hurts back here"
Me: "Hmm, I wonder if you are getting another molar, let me check"
Jake: "I don't want the tooth fairy to come Mom"
Me: "Okay, well you don't need to worry about that, the tooth fairy only comes when you lose a tooth, and it will be a while still before you lose any teeth"
Jake: (Slight whimpering) "I don't want the tooth fairy to come"
Me: "Okay, well when you do lose a tooth, if you want, we can put a little bag on your door handle and put your tooth in there for the tooth fairy to take away, that way she doesn't have to come into your room"
Jake: (more pronounced whimpering) "No, I don't like the tooth fairy, I don't want the tooth fairy to come at all".
Me: "Okay Jake, let's not worry about the tooth fairy, or losing teeth, or anything else like that until we need to - let's just worry about things that are actually going on instead of worrying about things that aren't even an issue"
Jake: "humph"
Me: "Let's sing sunshine"

Yeah, so no idea where this fear of the tooth fairy has come from, or why he decided to bring it up at bedtime - but yeah, I was liking the whole hang a bag on the door idea - talk about easier to not wake him up when slipping $$ in for the tooth, but maybe it will have to be a put it in a box on the kitchen table so that he doesn't freak out even more when he actually does lose a tooth (cause this kid will remember, he remembers everything).

Yay for irrational fears starting before they even need to!!

Hopefully just a bad day

Well, I am hoping Travis is just having a bad day, and isn't actually going to become "one of those" kids...

I got to school to pick up the boys - after having a highly successful and productive morning myself - and Jake of course is OVERJOYED to see me as he always is, and runs to me for a huge hug the second I get there.  Travis is standing by the door crying Mama, mama, mama (yeah I wasn't the first one to pick up in the toddler room).

So we are grabbing up Travis's things, and his teacher stops me and says "I was going to call you, but I didn't get a chance, I need to tell you that Travis..." and then she proceeds to do this weird grasping thing with her hand.  And I was like - "uh, grabbed something?".  No apparently not, the weird grasping motion apparently symbolizes biting.  Yep, my kid bit some other kid in class - and on the face none the less.

Apparently they were just all sitting down at the end of class, and this kid must have been closer than Travis wanted him/her to be because the teacher said they weren't fighting or anything, he just leaned over and bit him.  So Travis had to sit in the time-out chair at school, and was told that "our teeth are for eating food, not for biting friends".

So to whoever the other child is, and their parents (very much their parents, because apparently some other kid bit this same kid earlier in the day too) - I am so very sorry for my child's actions, it is completely out of character for him, and I hope that it does not ever occur again.
